Today, for the first time ever… I had Smarties. Not the U.S. version of Smarties which are sugar pills, like Pixy Stix in condensed tablets. But Canadian Smarties… like an M&M but not.
Being the first business day following Halloween trick-or-treat, a number of co-workers brought bowls full of candy into the office in order to keep it away from their children. (An evil thing to do to a child IMHO but I profit out of the situation so far be it from me to complain.) So there I was, standing next to the microwave, heating my lunch when I looked in the bowl and there… right on top…was a little box of Smarties with wording printed in both English and French.
I gasped – then snagged the treat from the bowl and immediately dug through the entire thing looking for more. No such luck. I got the only one. But I also managed to find a snack pack of M&M’s while I was there.
I rushed back to my desk and proceeded to carefully open my box of Smarties (I didn’t want to damage the package in any way.) I then did a taste test comparison between the two types of candy.
I thought at first I would have trouble being impartial. I grew up with M&M’s, had been eating them since before the old red dye flavor got discontinued in the 70’s for being a carcinogen. Even though I’ve spent most of my life living in a U.S. state that borders Canada, I couldn’t remember ever having had Smarties. Not even when I visited Toronto.
But now, after tasting both side by side I can honestly say that I prefer Smarties! Neither candy tastes like chocolate, (and I do love my chocolate) but the Smarties have a definite cocoa flavor while the M&M’s just taste like sugar. I’m not a coffee drinker – so I couldn’t go so far as to taste compare the resulting mixture of candy-to-chocolate beverage.
But the entire experience has put a goofy smile on my face for the entire day. It may have made my week – definitely made my Monday a whole lot easier to bear.
